Kirsty Walker BACP Accredited

BACP Accredited

I have been a working as a counsellor for 11 years, and during that time, I have always been a member of the BACP  – the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. My counselling practise is built around this framework and the ethics it sets out, putting the clients needs first and allowing me to provide a safe counselling environment.

On the 3rd June 2021, I achieved my BACP accreditation and I am now an accredited member of the BACP – MBACP (Accred). The accreditation is extensive, requiring a minimum number of counselling hours and years experience, ongoing CPD training, supervision as well as a number of pieces of written work that are submitted and marked, including case studies and reports explaining how I use counselling theories within my work.

Accreditation has always been a really important milestone for me to achieve as the scheme aims to recognise the achievement of high standards of knowledge, experience and development in counselling and psychotherapy which is what I have always aimed for. It is also designed to help clients, employers, practitioners and students to make an informed decision when choosing a therapist.

Coronavirus update – June 2021

Due to the easing of coronavirus restrictions, Morgan Walker Counselling plans to return to face to face counselling in October, delivering counselling sessions from a new location in Peterborough.  Initially, I will be taking reservations for face to face counselling in October on a Friday only. These sessions will follow any government guidelines to offer a safe space for counselling to take place.

The new location for face to face counselling sessions will be 16 Crawthorne Road, Peterborough, PE1 4AB. The location is within walking distance of Peterborough town centre, so offers easy access to local residents as well and many transport links, including train and buses. Car parking is also available outside of the location.

Coronavirus

Coronavirus update – March 2020

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, Morgan Walker Counselling is taking measures to ensure the safety of clients by only delivering counselling sessions remotely, via video call or telephone. This will likely continue for a few months as the virus outbreak increases, but also in line with any further government advice and recommendations.

For existing and new clients, a guide to setup for video calling can be found here.

Setup is really easy and just involves installing an app on your smart device. If you are using a laptop with a webcam, you will not need to install any software to join the video call.

Mental Health Awareness Week Body Image

Mental Health Awareness Week 2019

Mental Health Awareness Week takes place between 13th-19th May 2019 and the theme focused on this year is body image. It has been running since 2001 to raise awareness of mental health problems such as stress, relationships, loneliness, sleep, alcohol and friendship.

The Mental Health Foundation offer a lot of resources and information about how you can raise awareness and run your own events. Their supporters pack can be downloaded here.

To follow updates on stories and events, follow the hastags #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek and #BeBodyKind on Twitter.

Some statistics from the Mental Health Foundation on why recognising mental health problems are so important :-

  • 68% of women and 57% of men with mental health problems are parents
  • Working people with mental health problems contribute £226m a year to the UK economy – that’s 12.1% of GDP
  • In 2017/8 mental health problems accounted for 15.4 million sick leave days in the UK

If you are think you suffer from or are struggling with a Mental Health problem, don’t be afraid to talk about it or ask for help. This is the first step to help in understanding it and helping you deal with the effects. If you would like to book a counselling appointment, please fill out this form or contact me here.

Children's mental health

Children’s Mental Health Week

This week is Children’s Mental Health Week. You can follow the hashtag #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek on Twitter for useful links and information about this important topic.

Some of the statistics on children’s mental health are quite staggering, where on average, children and young people with mental health difficulties go ten years between first becoming unwell and getting any help. More information on this can been gathered from the centre for mental health’s website.

The Mental Health Foundation also have an interesting article on children’s mental health here, where an estimated 50% of mental health problems are established by age 14 and 75% by age 24. This is a scary statistic and shows the need that more help is needed for children and younger people in regards to their mental health.

As a society, we need to target the stigma that surrounds mental health early on throughout education and make young people aware that it is important to talk about these issues and seek help at an early age.

Young Minds is another great resource for young people and parents to find out more information about mental help, the different types of mental health conditions and the help that is available.

If you are a parent or young person and would like to discuss counselling with Morgan Walker Counselling, please contact me here.
